Keeping Kids Safe

Child sexual abuse is “a silent epidemic,” according to the American Medical Association. It is so widespread that each of us probably knows someone who has been victimized or who has abused. The Enough Abuse series empowers parents, youth, professionals and other concerned adults to prevent people from victimizing children and youth today and to prevent children from developing abusive behaviors in the future.


We are thankful to collaborate this month with Internet Crimes Against Children to hear their expertise on keeping kids safe online.


Objectives:

  • Understand child abuse as a public health problem
  • Understand the nature and scope of child sexual abuse and exploitation
  • Minimize dangers to our children in our communities and online
  • Navigate the internet and understand what happens when children “log on”
  • Recognize signs and conditions that support child sexual abuse
  • Recognize potential grooming behaviors in adults
  • Learn strategies for preventing child sexual abuse
  • Learn how to respond to disclosures and report child sexual abuse
  • Identify “developmentally expected” sexual behaviors of children and youth and recognize those that might be inappropriate, coercive, abusive or illegal
  • Respond to all sexual behaviors in ways that promote healthy development of children and that support others who may be affected
