CHILD SAFETY AND PROTECTION AWARENESS

November is Child Safety and Protection Awareness month, which is a time for individuals, professionals and communities to raise awareness about childhood safety. We will start the month discussing Grooming: Red Flag Behaviors. By defining grooming behaviors, we can have a better understanding of what behaviors to be aware of.

Next, we will discuss how to encourage boundaries to minimize dangers to children and teens in our communities. We will conclude the month with a special guest from Working Against Violence, Inc. (WAVI) to discuss teen dating violence. Attendees will be encouraged to think about how they can recognize and discuss these topics within their own “sphere of influence” (family, workplace, school, community, etc.). Recognizing the potential dangers children and teens face every day, we can take steps in preventing these dangers.

Objectives:

  • Define grooming
  • Understand the conditions that support child sexual abuse
  • Recognize potential grooming behaviors in adults
  • Explore healthy boundaries
  • Assess our own boundary setting
  • Explore how lack of boundaries can create vulnerability
  • Identify the signs of teen dating violence and how to intercede if you see it
