Cory Tells a Story

Meet Cory Tomovick, Reading Specialist at CHS’s Owen School in the Black Hills. Cory works for the Rapid City School
District and provides reading intervention instruction at CHS.

“It is a privilege to do this work,” Cory says. “For the most part I get to work one-to-one with students who are below grade levels
on reading for 20 minutes daily. I do my job and kids improve as readers.”

“It is meaningful and necessary work, and it has solidified my belief we are here to help others, especially those most at risk."

But that’s not all Cory does. She’s also a veteran singer, songwriter and storyteller who performs a one-woman show under the name Cory Cavill called Welcome to the Frog Pond!

“It is the story of me reframing messages I have received throughout my life to help me heal and hopefully be a more fully functioning human,” says Cory.

Looking for Work

It’s no secret that the impactful work we do here at CHS can be stressful and downright difficult at times. But that’s why it’s so important to find the silver linings throughout the day and appreciate life’s little moments of joy that encourage us to keep pushing on and fighting the good fight.

This new feature is a great way to share the heartfelt reminders the universe sends us when we start to have seeds of doubt.

Jessica Broullire is an Education and Public Awareness/Community Navigator in Rapid City. She recently had a conversation with a young kiddo that brought a smile to her face. Hopefully, this story can make you smile, too.

I was recently providing advocacy for a family with a pre-teen child–about 11 years old. I asked her how school was going and she immediately started talking about her dislike for school and how she was ready to join the workplace. She told me she couldn’t wait to have a job and earn her own money.

“Speaking of jobs, do you know Indeed?” Read more here.

Seasoned Staff

Name: Melissa Edman
Position: Development Specialist
Years at CHS: 16

Have you heard the news? Melissa Edman is this month’s featured Seasoned Staff employee. She says she has seen many changes over the past 16 years, but the one constant is the amazing people she works with.

“I have absolutely loved my time at Children’s Inn/Shelter for Family Safety. I not only have the best boss but also an amazing team I have the privilege to work with. That makes all the difference between wanting to come to work and having to come to work. “

In her spare time, she loves to crochet and spend time with her horse, Tessa. Learn more.

REMINDER: ALL HANDS MEETING

The All Hands quarterly meeting is this Tuesday and Wednesday! Choose one of the three meeting options that best fits your schedule.

We encourage everyone to submit questions before the meeting. Black metal lunch boxes can be found on all Administrative Assistants’ desks at all campus locations. Click here for more.

ASK US: YOU ASK, WE ANSWER!

Thank you for your questions and patience as we get through the backlog of questions. This week’s question is regarding the deck on the Daugaard Dining Hall.

Q: Is there a reason why kids and staff are not able to use the beautiful new deck in the new dining hall?
