fdDid you know?
- Nearly 1 in 2 women
- 2 in 5 men
will experience physical violence from an intimate partner during their lifetime
These 2025 numbers from the CDC show that domestic violence is increasing. Every year, Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety runs Drive Out Domestic Violence, an awareness and fundraising campaign.
Stats show that domestic violence rises by 12% during the summer, so July is a good time to spread the word.

Survivors of domestic violence who have experienced trauma may be among those served in all CHS programs. Studies link exposure to domestic violence as a child to a wide range of issues including PTSD, behavioral, psychological and physical problems, academic failure, substance abuse and the risk for increased aggression and violence in the future.
Spread the word among your friends and family and let’s all work to Drive Out Domestic Violence!
#DODV Update
Each year, thousands of victims of domestic violence call our crisis hotline or walk through our doors, seeking safety and a path forward. In 2024, the Shelter for Family Safety served 3,172 people. These numbers remind us why we need to spread the message that hope is stronger than fear.
Outreach Advocate JaeLynn Garry works closely with many domestic violence survivors at the Shelter. She sees how survivors change their way of thinking when they receive help, hope and support.

DODV Update—Heather’s Video
Nearly half of all domestic violence incidents go unreported. Sometimes, the first step toward giving a client hope is simply letting them know we’re here to listen—and saying three powerful words, “I believe you.”
Shelter for Family Safety Case Manager Heather Plueger said it best: “Hope is believing in the client and making sure they know that they are heard and understood.” Watch her video here.
Don’t forget, you can purchase and donate items at Lewis Drugstore in Harrisburg and Sioux Falls until July 31. Let’s keep working together to Drive Out Domestic Violence!
This is the final week to help us Drive Out Domestic Violence. You can purchase and donate items at Lewis Drug stores in Harrisburg and Sioux Falls until Thursday, July 31.
