The coronavirus does not infect our ability to have fun. Here are just a few of the activities that have gone on this summer…
BHCH Slip 'n Slide
Barb Rostad was a Team Coordinator for Tully House at BHCH for many years. Sadly, Barb passed away in the fall of 2018. This summer, in memory of Barb, her family provided funds for a slip ‘n slide for the kids at BHCH to enjoy! Such a kind and thoughtful gesture given in memory of a truly special lady.
SFCH Field Day
By Rachel Schwans
CHS Marketing Intern
What is a better way to spend a hot summer day than being outside enjoying a field day? At SFCH, we did just that!
Sioux Falls Children’s Home Loving School held their annual Field Day on June 30. The students enjoyed a variety of activities—including a staff dunk tank, relay races, trips down an inflatable water slide, volleyball games played with a giant inflatable beach ball, friendly games of kickball, and so much more!
Thank you to Jacob Haugen, Recreation Coordinator, and Mike Groher, SFCH Education Director, for organizing this event, and to all staff who made this day possible for the students as well as cheering them on throughout the events!
Good Deeds
Crystal Groeneweg’s classroom made 4th of July cards and posters wishing patients at the VA Hospital a Happy Independence Day, and to let them know they are thankful to them for our freedoms!
Even Therapy can be Fun!
Kelly Van Den Berg, a family therapist at SFCH, likes to find unique ways to reach our kids. As a matter of fact, her “Word of the Month” for June was unique, with a focus on what makes each person special and different.
Kelly drew an outline of a body on a whiteboard which was broken into three parts—head, torso, and legs. Group members were asked to share parts of the head that make them unique from others such as eye color, type and color of hair, wearing glasses, facial hair, wearing hats, etc. The same was done with the torso and legs.
Group members were then instructed to make some unique characters by making a head, torso, and legs on three pieces of paper. They were encouraged to think about drawing those things they believe are unique about themselves. Then Kelly collected all the drawings and—just for fun—mixed them up to see what different and unique characters could be made. The characters were displayed on the unit for everyone to enjoy!
