Happy National Nurses Week! Tomorrow, May 6, marks the beginning of a week-long celebration to honor all the nurses in our lives. At CHS, we have a few of these special folks on each campus. Take some time to thank them for the amazing work they do for our kiddos and clients.

Our Bright Start Nurse Home Visitors, Shelter Therapist Jeanne Weyen and State Department of Health employee Hollie Consoer had a jolly good time at the Christmas party last December. Back row: Holly Wilgers, Jeanne W, Kathy Schneider, Kristy Hazel, Therese Marlette and Amanda Tilberg. Sitting: Barb Roozen, Hollie Consoer, Samantha Rupp and Christine Garbers.

You can find Jennifer Stavenger, Amanda Hoskins and Casey Steiner helping our kiddos around the Sioux Falls campus.

Coral Hein, Tayler Monlux, Michelle Bintliff and Sabrina Johnston can be found around BHCH and the new Rapid City campus. Make sure to thank them for their hard work if you see them this week.

The History of National Nurses Week

In 1953, Dorothy Sunderland, an employee of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare sent President Eisenhower a proposal to dedicate a special day to celebrate and honor the work nurses do for their patients. It wasn’t until 20 years later that President Nixon officially declared a week in October as National Nurses Week. The date for Nurses Week was later changed to May 6—12, to honor the birthday of Florence Nightingale—the founder of nursing.
