Children’s Home Society Board and Children’s Home Foundation Board met for the joint 2023 Annual Board of Directors Annual Meeting on September 28-29, 2023, in Rapid City.

History was made at the 2023 Annual Board Meeting when the Board of Directors voted unanimously to purchase and remodel the National American University (NAU) building in Rapid City as the future site of all Black Hills services. It’s an investment in the future of families in South Dakota—and our staff—and we couldn’t be more excited!

Located on Highway 16 in Rapid City, the site will bring together Residential Treatment, Education, Community Based Services, Prevention and Children’s Home Child Advocacy Center under one roof. We anticipate construction to begin in late 2024 with a mid-2026 move-in date.

Children's Home Directors and the Executive Leadership team attended the 2023 Annual Board Meeting on September 28-29, 2023.

Having all our Black Hills programs and services located under one roof will allow us to better serve families and children in the community. The new location will be more convenient for staff, families, partners and visiting care providers.

Voting to purchase the new site was a prudently sound financial decision by our Board of Directors which will serve the organization and the community for years to come. We will eventually sell our Rockerville Road and Jolly Lane locations in Rapid City.

We know you will have many questions about the new campus, and as we move forward, we will keep you updated. Fundraising efforts, design and development of the site are still in their initial stages.

CEO Michelle Lavallee toasted the Board on their monumental decision to move forward with the purchase of the NAU site:

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today, we raise our glasses to a board of directors whose vision and commitment knows no bounds. With a unanimous vote, you have chosen to invest in not just a building, but in the futures of countless vulnerable children and families in Rapid City.

Your decision today is more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a legacy, one that will positively influence our community and the entire state of South Dakota for generations.

To the Children’s Home Society and Foundation boards: this day will be etched in history as a monumental testament to your dedication. Here’s to making impactful decisions and to brighter futures!
