TIO Tips for December 2023

In 1963, Andy Williams sang about the holidays being “the most wonderful time of the year.” For many of us this is true, but for others this is also a time of extra activities, expectations, grieving and reliving past experiences. All of these can add to everyday stress, producing tolerable stress or even toxic stress.

Your TIO (Trauma-informed Organization) committee would like to remind you of a few self-care tips that are great for any day but especially great when we feel extra stress. This month, focus on setting realistic expectations for yourself and others, including realistic expectations for your budget.

Saying “no” can help with realistic expectations as you focus on what is most important instead of getting “everything” done. Caring is often spelled as TIME not PRESENTS. Prioritizing relationships during the holidays shows people you care, and those positive memories will be treasures throughout the year.

If you are struggling, we encourage you to use our EAP benefit as discussed at the All Hands meeting in November. Holidays are a time to celebrate with those you care about, be they family or friends. By saying no, embracing realistic expectations and prioritizing relationships, you can savor the magic of the season!
