Tell us about your family.
My family is a group of people who fit together by God’s grace. We’re a conglomerate of ages, races, religions, sexual orientations, physical limitations, birth stories, interests, talents and professions. Loyalty and humor are the glue.
If you could do anything you want on a day off, what would you do?
Oh, how I wish I could say skydiving or climbing Mount Everest. Hmmm…my best day off would be time with a few chosen people I love, enjoying a mix of serious conversation, and bursts of laughter.
What are your 2 favorite movies and 1 favorite book?
Good Will Hunting
Hidden Figures
When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
What is your favorite sports team?
Minnesota Vikings (helps me be a good loser and builds humility)
What is your favorite treat?
Pringles (plain)
York Mints
What are some of the biggest changes you have seen over your years with CHS?
The addition of the Maintenance building, Madsen House, Haugo Dining Room, Administration building, the remodel of Madsen House and the expansion of Van Demark, and Loving School.
Increased census. SFCH served 36 (I think) residential kids when I started here. Of course, the growth of all departments and the addition of staff has increased markedly.
Do you have a memory or two that stand out from your time with CHS?
I am brought to (mostly) happy tears when I reflect memories from my time here. I recall early Christmas Programs after which we’d gather together, remove uncomfortable shoes and nibble Christmas cookies…reflecting on the beauty of kids and Christmas! I remember specific kids telling their stories and having no response other than holding and rocking them. I remember so many events where we’ve welcomed people to campus and showed them what we’re about….sometimes the sense of pride has been overwhelming! Then, there’s the cherished laughter and tears shared among the best people in all the world…my colleagues (past and present) who I’ve worked alongside for the past 34 years!
What has been your reason/motivation to stay at CHS?
This is a sanctuary for kids and families who struggle with what life has handed them. It’s a responsibility and a privilege to be part of their healing. I believe what happens here receives God’s stamp of approval.
If you hadn’t chosen this as a career, what would have been your second choice?
I thought about teaching art…but I couldn’t draw or teach.
What advice would you have for newly hired employees?
You’ll learn more from the tough times than you will from the easy times.
Stay the course. Kids require patience. They need you to keep showing up.
Develop the courage to intentionally go where kids have gone…listen, comfort and know you are integral to their healing.
Believe in yourself. Bring the best you have to give. Mediocrity doesn’t yield great outcomes, but excellence does.
Let kids “borrow” your courage, your optimism, your joy, and your hope when theirs is depleted. Hope is a powerful force and things usually work out for the best.
