IT Updates
CHS Staff Members,
IT is continuously working to enhance security here at Children's Home Society. In an age where cyber threats are increasingly common, it is crucial that we strengthen our defenses to protect the sensitive data we handle. To that end, IT will be implementing several key security measures over the coming weeks:
1. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Enrollment
Reason: MFA is essential for securing accounts with access to sensitive information. It adds an extra layer of protection beyond just a password. We will identify individuals not yet enrolled in MFA and reach out to assist with the enrollment process.
Effect: When logging into your email or online accounts with your CHS credentials, MFA will prompt you to authenticate. Your sessions will last up to 14 days before you are asked to re-authenticate. This ensures that only the rightful account owner can access their account. CHS will use an Authenticator app or SMS codes for MFA.
Resolution: IT is available to support you through this transition and answer any questions you may have.
2. Stronger Passwords
Reason: Given our work with HIPAA and confidential information, stronger passwords are necessary to safeguard our accounts. Implementing more complex passwords provides an initial line of defense against unauthorized access.
Effect: Passwords will need to be at least 12 characters long and include a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters. Alternatively, you can use a memorable three-word passphrase.
Resolution: IT will offer guidance on creating strong yet manageable passwords to ensure both security and ease of use.
3. Local Admin Restrictions
Reason: Allowing local admin access on workstations can pose significant risks if a workstation is compromised. It could lead to the installation of malicious software, potentially impacting the entire organization.
Effect: Staff will no longer have local admin rights to install software or applications without IT assistance.
Resolution: We have implemented a new remote support tool to streamline assistance. If you need to install software, please submit a help desk ticket, and IT will provide support either remotely or in person at a scheduled time.
If you have any questions or concerns, please submit a help desk request or contact me directly.
Thank you,
