Featured Pet - October 2023

Pet of the Month

This is the first time we have featured a pet that is available for adoption!

Pet Name: Nelly

Foster Parent and CHS Position: Katie Underberg, Crisis Advocate, Shelter for Family Safety

Short Bio: Nelly is our current and first ever foster dog. She came to us from West River where she was a stray on one of the reservations. We knew next to nothing about Nelly when we took her in. When she first arrived at our house, Nelly was terrified of water and had gone a full three days without going to the bathroom. She was brought to the vet for fear that her bladder would burst but was sent home because she had tested negative for an infection. She finally warmed up enough to trust us and started to drink and eat and started to come out of her shell.

Nelly is the sweetest girl and has been learning how to be a dog with the help of our resident dog, Rudy. Nelly absolutely LOVES children and will warm up to them much quicker than adults. It has been very hard to not “foster fail” and adopt her but we that know if we do, we won’t be able to help other dogs that are needing foster homes. She is available for adoption through Almost Home Canine Rescue. https://www.petfinder.com/dog/...

Age: 2-3 years old

Breed: Mixed

Favorite food: Anything. I am not picky at all!

Favorite nap spot: Anywhere near my safe people or my foster brother.

Favorite toy: Anything that squeaks. Bonus points if it is used for fetch!

Favorite activity: Playing fetch or wrestling with my foster brother.

Naughtiest habit: Chasing bunnies. I just can’t help it!

Biggest pet peeve: I really don’t like it when my foster parents mow the yard. The mower is loud and scary.

Funniest memory with your pet: When Nelly is playing with our resident dog, she will try to sit on his head to “win” their wrestling matches. She is so goofy!

What are some of your nicknames? Nelly Belly, Stinker, Pretty Girl
