Almost five years ago, Josh Porto struggled to balance work, family time and finances. While searching for a new career, he came across an overnight position at BHCH. He felt drawn to our mission, flexible work hours, competitive pay and benefits, and a multitude of potential growth opportunities.
Fast forward to today, Josh, an RYC II, loves his role at CHS. And now he’s sharing what makes working here so rewarding. Over the past four and a half years, Josh has personally referred six employees to CHS. When speaking with potential candidates, he highlights the same four key points that attracted him, along with the personal accomplishments he’s achieved thanks to the help of our organization.
“CHS does a great job of making employees aware of what their job is and how to succeed at it,” said Josh. “In addition, the flexibility of the night shift is second to none. I was able to complete my bachelor’s degrees online during low-risk hours, and I know several people who I referred who are doing the same thing now.”
Josh’s most recent referral, RYC Logan Phelps, was a friend from his church parenting group. When Logan shared some challenges he faced at work, Josh immediately explained how CHS helped him overcome similar obstacles. That conversation made an impact.
“He applied the next day and is now pursuing his teaching degree thanks to CHS’s flexibility,” said Josh.
Freddy Maseman, VP of Psychiatric Residential Treatment, emphasized that employee referrals build stronger teams.
“The employee usually has an existing relationship with the candidate and already knows their work ethic. When an employee is willing to put their reputation on the line, it shows a high level of trust,” said Freddy. “Likewise, the new hire likely knows about our mission and what it’s like to work here through the staff member’s experience.”
While building a good team is important, for Josh, referring someone to CHS holds deeper meaning.
“It’s incredibly fulfilling to refer someone to work here,” said Josh. “Not only do I help bring talented people to CHS, but I also contribute to ensuring our kids receive consistent, quality care—which is at the heart of our mission.”
Refer A Friend
We believe that great employees know great people. Did you know that CHS offers a referral bonus program?
If you refer someone to a full-time position and they work here for a year, you’re eligible for a $1,000 bonus. If you refer someone to a part-time position and they work here for a year, you could earn a $500 bonus.
Josh said he would refer great candidates regardless, but the bonus program is a nice reward.
“It’s a meaningful perk that reminds me to actively champion CHS when opportunities arise—like when coworkers or friends discuss career changes or I see open roles,” said Josh. “It’s an underutilized benefit that can serve everyone! And who doesn’t like $1,000?”
