Thanks for your Ask Us questions. After a backlog, we are back with a slightly new format. Some of the questions we receive can be grouped together with a single response.
We also encourage you to pose questions first to your supervisors, when possible. They have more understanding of specifics within your department.
Q: Why do Loving and Owen School not follow the same traditional public school year holiday schedule (i.e. President's Day, Native American Day, spring break, etc.)? Wouldn't following the same (or similar) holiday schedules contribute to a much smoother transition when students discharge from CHS?
Thanks for your question; other employees have also wondered about this policy. As a private organization, Children’s Home Society operates on our own calendar, which may or may not align with recognized holidays in a public school district—which vary from one district to another.
Additionally, CHS Schools work in collaboration with our Residential Treatment programs which provide year-round services to our children in residential care. Day School student participation on school district holidays is left to the discretion of our public school district partners, who take into account their goals for student growth and development, and their ability to provide transportation. Our public-school partners recognize the amount of time that their students are in our schools may shorten the overall time away from the public-school setting. Ultimately, time in our classrooms will best help students transition to public schools.
