A Truly Epic Poem!

April is poetry month, so the blended 3rd/4th grade classroom at Loving School in Sioux Falls has been learning about different types of poems.

According to Crystal Groeneweg, one week they learned about acrostic poems, which use the letters in a word to begin each line of the poem. All lines of the poem relate to or describe the main topic word.

Isaac wrote this acrostic poem about CHS during Friday Free Write Time. “He felt he was really knowledgeable about CHS so he could write a lot about it in the poem,” says Crystal. “He came up with some of the words from things he has experienced at CHS.”

“When it comes to the word ‘impenetrable,’ Isaac referred to staff keeping children very safe and letting them share their big feelings. He also knows that staff keep their bodies safe and that if anything bad did get into CHS, that staff would protect them,” Crystal says.

“Isaac also used the word ‘epic’ three times, and with good reason,” says Crystal. “When asked why he chose to use that word, he responded, ‘The staff that take care of us are epic. They like us and take care of us even after we’ve had a behavior. They aren’t here for the money, they are here to help kids.’”

Isaac is pretty epic himself!
