Day School Program

We meet children where they are...

Sometimes a child will have emotional or behavioral needs that challenge the most loving parent and capable school district. While children in residential treatment attend school on campus at Black Hills Children's Home and Sioux Falls Children's Home, we also offer a Day School Program at both locations to help children who are able to reside with their parents or guardians, but do not function well in a traditional classroom setting.

Our Day School Program provides year-round education services as well as individual, group, and family therapy for students and their families.

We specialize in treating educational needs relating to:

  •  Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  •  Reactive Attachment Disorder
  •  Childhood Trauma
  •  Abuse and Neglect
  •  Anxiety Disorder
  •  Aggression
  •  Parent-Child Challenges

About Our Schools

Loving School at Sioux Falls Children's Home and Owen School at Black Hills Children's Home serve students ages 4-14, in grades PreK through 8th Grade, including children in both the Day School and Residential Treatment Programs.

Each classroom has a teacher and teacher assistant with a student to staff ratio of 6:1. A Master Treatment Plan with individualized therapy goals is created for each student.

A student does not need an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to be enrolled in our schools. If a student does have an IEP, the IEP is implemented and managed by Loving School staff.

Each student's treatment team meets quarterly to share progress and monitor treatment goals. Students are evaluated through classroom observations, work samples, file reviews, and skill-based assessments.

Students receive individual and group therapy weekly. Students have access to medical care and psychiatric services as needed. Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech/Language services are contracted with licensed therapists.

Loving and Owen School staff work with the student's home school district to establish a transition plan. Curriculum follows Common Core standards, and we participate in standardized statewide assessments. Our educational program also includes art, music, and physical education teachers, and a reading specialist.

Both Loving School and Owen School are certified through the South Dakota Department of Education. We follow Department of Education regulations and can offer evaluations to determine eligibility for special education services.
