July Learning Series - Preventing Child Sexual Abuse
Every year in youth-serving organizations across the U.S., children learn skills, build self-esteem and are challenged to explore new worlds.
Unfortunately, the same factors that create a nurturing environment may also increase a child’s vulnerability by providing access to children and “cover” that sexual abusers seek. Adults who work in these organizations and programs need a comprehensive strategy to prevent sexual abuse, protect children in their care and avoid potential legal and financial liabilities. A key tactic is to educate all staff and volunteers about child sexual abuse and how it can be prevented.
Series Objectives:
- Understand the nature and scope of child sexual abuse and exploitation
- Learn strategies for preventing sexual abuse and misconduct in youth-serving organizations
- Recognize and respond to boundary violating behaviors
- Understand the importance of creating codes of conduct and policies to protect children, staff, and the organization
- Learn how to respond to disclosures
- Understand mandatory reporting roles, obligations, and process
- Discuss policy considerations and best practices
