Session 1: Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences - Impact of Trauma – July 2025 Learning Series
Prevention – July 2025 Learning Series
Impact of Trauma
The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Study findings revolutionized our understanding of physical, social, mental, and societal health and well-being. We now know that leading causes of disease and disability, learning and productivity problems, and early death have their roots in the cumulative neurodevelopmental impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Attendees will learn about ACEs and ACEs research, and be encouraged to think about how this information could be applied within their own family, workplace, school, community, etc.
Understanding Vicarious Trauma is especially impactful for law enforcement, child protection, school counselors, community counselors, teachers, and other professionals/volunteers that have experienced victimization or trauma. By learning how trauma impacts the brain and behavior we can discover how to increase personal resiliency.
In this series, you’ll learn to:
- Understand how brains adapt to the environment during childhood
- Learn the basic concepts of toxic stress and its impact on development.
- Review the data and key findings from the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study
- Discover the framework for building resiliency for individuals and communities
- Understand the risk of indirect exposure to trauma
- Recognize the difference between burnout and vicarious trauma
- Recognize the symptoms of vicarious trauma
