Suicide Awareness and the Trauma Informed Classroom

This series will examine the symptoms and behaviors of trauma in children, suicidal awareness, the best actions for response and methods for ensuring a trauma-informed classroom.

The first session will examine the intersection of trauma and learning. Dysregulated bodies and minds can hijack precious learning time. Understanding the “why” behind the behavior improves responses to dysregulation. We will discuss simple strategies to connect and redirect the behavior to get students and learning back on track. The second session will examine efforts to promote 988 awareness, as well as an investigation into why Indigenous populations don’t respond as readily to conventional suicide prevention measures. The final session will examine QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer), a nationally recognized suicide intervention training. Participants will learn about suicide in both the U.S. and South Dakota, recognize the power of resiliency and gain valuable, practical skills in asking questions, persuading someone to stay alive, and making a referral to a professional. All attendees will receive a two-year QPR certification from the training.

*Kate Swallow and Trish Collins are both program navigators of the Great Plains 988 Tribal Response team. They are employed with the Great Plains Tribal Leaders Health Board at the Oyate Health Center in Rapid City, SD.

**Whitney Bischoff works as a Community Prevention Advisor in the Black Hills for state-wide non-profit Lost&Found. Her work includes offering comprehensive, data-driven programming and services to reduce suicide risk in people ages 10-34.
