Poverty Informed Workplace

In this series, we will examine the barriers that those in poverty face, particularly when attempting to access and achieve in our middle-class systems of employment, education, healthcare and justice.

Studies shows that 49% of entry level workers come from low-income families. Entry level occupations are typically defined as positions in retail, food service, housekeeping, and care positions (nursing aides, daycare etc.). These employees face particular barriers in traditional employment settings.

Participants will learn how companies have increased employee retention, lowered turnover and saved money by utilizing research-based interventions regarding transportation, childcare, communication and training, and even how and when the employee is paid. Improving relationships between staff and management lowers stress, increases joy, and ultimately leads to businesses providing better service.

Tracy Palecek is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Human Services professional who also has a passion for supporting and encouraging those brave souls in the helping professions. She is based in Rapid City, SD.
