PTSD Awareness Month, Part 2: PTSD Awareness from a Military Perspective - June Learning Series

PTSD Awareness Month

In recognition of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) Month, this two-part series will first provide a basic understanding of how trauma affects the brain, as well as ways to build resilience and coping skills. We will discuss the impact of trauma exposure, both directly and indirectly, how to identify risk factors and how to develop strategies for personal wellness.

We will then hear from Emily Rollason*, manager of the DOD Sexual Assault Advocate Certification Program for the 114th Fighter Wing, South Dakota Air National Guard on the impact of PTSD in the military. She will give an overview of trauma in the military setting, as well as a brief overview of their services for military members.

Objectives:

• Understand PTSD and the risk of direct and indirect exposure to trauma
• Discuss the ethical imperative of self-care
• Recognize vicarious traumatization in an organizational setting
• Identify coping strategies that contribute to health and well-being
• Develop personal strategies to strengthen resilience

*Emily Rollason is a Sexual Assault Response Coordinator for the National Guard with 19 years of service and 4 overseas deployments. She has a master’s degree in military psychology from Adler University and eight years of experience in the field of victim services.
