ACEs Determinant of Health

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study findings represent a paradigm shift in understanding the origins of physical, social, mental, and societal health and wellbeing. We now know that leading causes of disease and disability, learning and productivity problems and early death have their roots in the cumulative neurodevelopmental impacts of ACEs.

Promoting better health and wellbeing in South Dakota begins with increasing awareness and understanding of Positive and Adverse Childhood Experiences (PACEs). Explore what helps people with high ACEs scores and review data collected specifically to learn about what helps parenting-age adults with a history of adversity. When parenting adults are more informed on the effects of ACEs and in turn have a better opportunity to experience healthy functioning day to day, they will be better able to prevent ACEs in their children’s lives.

The key goal of this training is to build a common language and understanding of ACEs and the related research. Attendees will be encouraged to think about how this information could be applied within their own families, workplaces, schools and communities.

Objectives:

  • Understand how brains adapt to the environment during childhood
  • Learn the basic concepts of toxic stress and its impact on development
  • Identify the impact of ACEs within the community
  • Identify Positive Childhood Experiences
  • Learn the resilience factors that reduce the impact of ACEs
